Abstract

The Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) plays an important role in air navigation systems, where the reliability of its mechanical components greatly affects the accuracy of air traffic monitoring. One of the critical components in MSSR radar is the freewheel clutch, which functions as a mechanical connector to ensure optimal antenna movement. However, in its operation, the freewheel clutch is prone to various failure modes that can affect the overall system performance. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the failure patterns of the freewheel clutch in the MSSR radar using the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) method. This study uses a qualitative approach to identify failure modes based on three main factors in FMEA, namely severity, occurrence, and detection. Data was collected through direct observation, questionnaires, interviews with technicians, and analysis of MSSR radar maintenance documents. The analysis results show that the failure mode with the highest Risk Priority Number (RPN) is a failure that poses a significant risk to the performance of the MSSR radar. The identification of this failure mode is expected to serve as a basis for stakeholders in prioritizing regular monitoring and evaluation of the freewheel clutch components. In conclusion, the application of the FMEA method in this study was able to systematically identify failure risks and provide maintenance priority recommendations, thereby helping to improve the operational reliability of the MSSR radar in the future.
