Abstract

The nearfield antenna plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy of aircraft landing navigation systems; however, its implementation at Soekarno-Hatta Airport remains suboptimal due to damage to the nearfield monitor card. This study aims to design a Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) as a technical solution to enhance the output signal quality of the nearfield monitoring antenna in the Glide Path (GP) system by Selex. The methodology follows an experimental approach involving design, simulation, and testing using the Advanced Design System (ADS) software. The LNA circuit was developed using SMD lumped components on an FR-4 substrate (εr = 4.4), featuring Pi network impedance matching at the input and T network at the output, along with a two-stage amplification utilizing 2SC3585 transistors with collector feedback biasing. Simulation results demonstrated excellent performance with a gain (S21) of 38.116 dB and return loss (S11) of –35.611 dB. However, measured results showed a gain reduction to 11.360 dB due to fabrication factors and component tolerances. Despite this, the LNA remains effective in amplifying weak RF signals as a pre-amplifier, restoring lost amplification functionality and maintaining monitoring performance within the GP system. The design shows strong potential for further development into a multi-band LNA to support additional air navigation systems.
