Abstract
Evaluasi pola visual scanning merupakan bagian krusial dalam pelatihan penerbangan karena berpengaruh langsung terhadap situational awareness dan keselamatan terbang. Di Politeknik Penerbangan Indonesia (PPI) Curug, penilaian pola scanning taruna selama latihan terbang masih mengandalkan observasi visual instruktur secara manual, sehingga rawan subjektivitas dan kurang terdokumentasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan metode evaluasi pola scanning berbasis teknologi eye tracking dengan pendekatan Research and Development (R&D) model 4D (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate).
Teknologi yang digunakan adalah kombinasi Beam Eye Tracker, OpenTrack, dan OBS Studio sebagai solusi low cost namun high impact. Penelitian dilakukan melalui perekaman pola scanning instruktur saat melaksanakan manuver (climbing turn, descending turn, slowflight descending turn, dan rate one turn) sesuai SOP. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara visual dan divalidasi oleh Senior Flight Instructor untuk menghasilkan produk berupa video pedoman pola scanning yang
layak digunakan sebagai referensi pembelajaran taruna.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode eye tracking ini mampu mendokumentasikan pola pandang instruktur secara objektif dan meningkatkan akurasi evaluasi dibanding metode manual. Meskipun teknologi yang digunakan belum memiliki fitur heatmap, fixation duration, dan gaze path otomatis, produk yang dihasilkan telah memenuhi standar sebagai bahan ajar pendukung briefing dan pembelajaran mandiri. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan pengembangan teknologi eye tracking yang lebih canggih serta kerja sama PPI Curug dengan penyedia profesional seperti Tobii kedepannya, sehingga institusi ini dapat menjadi pelopor penggunaan eye tracking pada bidang aviasi di Indonesia baik sipil maupun militer
udara.

Evaluating visual scanning patterns is a critical aspect of pilot training as it directly affects situational awareness and flight safety. At the Indonesian Aviation Polytechnic (PPI) Curug, the assessment of cadet scanning patterns during flight and simulator training still relies on manual visual observation by instructors, which is prone to subjectivity and lacks systematic documentation. This study aims to develop an eye tracking–based scanning evaluation method using the Research and Development (R&D) 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate).
The technology utilized combines Beam Eye Tracker, OpenTrack, and OBS Studio, offering a low-cost yet high-impact solution. The study involved recording instructor scanning patterns while performing simulator maneuvers (climbing turn, descending turn, slowflight descending turn, and rate one turn) according to SOP. The collected data were visually analyzed and validated by the Senior Flight Instructor to produce a video-based scanning pattern guide suitable for use as a cadet learning reference.
The findings indicate that this eye tracking method can objectively document instructor gaze patterns and improve evaluation accuracy compared to manual methods. Although the technology used lacks advanced features such as heatmap, fixation duration, and gaze path automation, the resulting product meets the standards for supporting briefing sessions and independent learning. This study recommends further development of more advanced eye tracking technology and institutional collaboration with professional providers such as Tobii, positioning PPI Curug as the first aviation institution in Indonesia wheter civil aviation or military to implement eye tracking comprehensively in its training programs.
