Abstract

Taxiway Guidance Sign (TGS) is part of the Airfield Lighting System (AFL) that provides visual information and guidance to pilots during aircraft movement on the taxiway. The reliability of TGS is supported by the performance of its power supply driver, which provides electrical power for the LED modules. Based on observations at Budiarto Airport, damage to the TGS driver power supply caused the lamps to become inoperative, while the Constant Current Regulator (CCR) and series isolating transformer were still functioning properly. In addition, the limited availability of original spare parts, relatively high procurement costs, and long procurement times can delay the maintenance of TGS facilities. Therefore, this study aims to design and develop an alternative driver power supply for LED-type TGS that is more efficient in terms of procurement cost and time by using electronic components that are readily available on the market. The research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE development model, consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The developed driver consists of a toroidal transformer, bridge rectifier, electrolytic capacitor, buck-boost converter, and LED module as the load. Testing included LED functional testing, short-circuit and open-circuit condition testing, a 9-hour endurance test, and validation testing involving supervisors and electrical technicians at Budiarto Airport. The results showed that the developed driver successfully provided a stable 24 V DC output, operated continuously for 9 hours without functional failure, and maintained normal LED illumination without flickering or overheating. The developed driver can therefore serve as an alternative replacement for the original manufacturer’s driver while supporting easier maintenance and more efficient procurement.
